Each year Cape Cod hosts dozens of fine arts and craft shows that exhibit the works of talented local artisans working in a number of different mediums. One of the highlights of a trip to Cape Cod most certainly is the discovery of a handmade treasure unlike anything you might find elsewhere. Be it glassblowers, jewelry makers, metal sculptors, watercolorists, weavers, or scrimshanders, Cape Cod is a haven for accomplished artists, many of whom are lured here from away. Perhaps it’s the light dancing on the water, the seemingly endless stretch of sand dunes, or the winding roads that wander through the scrub pine that inspire their creativity. Whatever arouses their artistic genius, we are the benefactors of their work.
The Artisans Guild of Cape Cod, one of the premier supporters of fine craftsmen in the area, produce several shows annually. This year’s events will take place as follows:
Independence Day Weekend, Saturday & Sunday, July 2 & 3. Outside – Windmill Green – Route 6 at Samoset Road.
Late July, Thursday & Friday, July 28 & 29. Outside – Windmill Green – Route 6 at Samoset Road.
Labor Day Weekend, sponsored by Whelden Library. Friday & Saturday, September 3 & 4. Inside/Outside – Whelden Library & WB Community Building, Route 149.
Fall For the Arts Weekend, Saturday & Sunday, October 1 & 2. Inside – Nauset Middle School – Route 28 near Eldredge Pkwy.
Thanksgiving Weekend, Friday & Saturday, November 25 & 26. Inside – Nauset Middle School – Route 28 near Eldredge Pkwy.
To complement the Artisans Guild, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod recently produced a guidebook of driving and walking itineraries to studios and galleries throughout the region, entitled the Arts & Artisans Trails of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. This well-conceived and beautifully executed guide, now in its second edition, will lead you off-the-beaten-track to the private homes and workshops of artists and craftsmen who have been honing their skills for many years. Grouped into seven distinct areas that stretch from the tip of Cape Cod to the canal, as well as to our off-shore islands, each unique trail is clearly marked and the artists’ work colorfully detailed. Available for purchase online at http://www.capeandislandsartsguide.com, the guide is also an integral part of the “Fall for Cape Cod” vacation package offered by the Classic Inns of Historic Cape Cod Bay.
